Shrewsbury Pride 2024 - Andy Mckeown, Theo Dussek, The Rock Choir, LOVE2SING Choir

The weekend of 27-29th September 2024 is the SECOND Shrewsbury Pride, and we’re proud to be supporting them with some fringe events here at Turned Wood Cafe, at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings.

What’s on

  • Friday 27th, 7pm-9pm, and 10am-4pm both Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th inside the cafe: Andy McKeown Installation - a Pride themed installation inside the cafe from the light and sound artist.

During the weekend you can also view Andy McKeown latest installation, Flaxmill Voices, across the wider Shrewsbury Flaxmill Voices site.

  • Sunday 11am - Theo Dussek, Pirate Toubador inside the cafe - singalong folk songs with modern indie-folk, to accompany your Sunday Brunch

    About Theo Dussek:
“Theo’s music blends ancient rural folklore, nautical romanticisms and the lonesome, dusty roads of Americana with acoustic guitar plucked in uplifting rhythms and melodic vocals driving the stories of his songs. Theo Dussek is a wandering minstrel who has come to sing his songs in the 21st century; your heart is safe and soothed in the hands of this pirate troubadour.”

  • 2pm - 3pm - The Rock Choir with feel good hits, on the terrace outside the cafe WEATHER DEPENDENT

The local group of the national Rock Choir family of contemporary choirs sing and perform a variety of feel-good hit songs.

  • 3pm - LoveSing Choir - a high energy contemporary choir, on the terrace outside the cafe WEATHER DEPENDENT

A high-energy, uplifting adult contemporary choir who just love to perform! We pride ourselves on singing songs that make people smile and want to sing and dance along.

Singing a range of songs from artists such as Mcfly, Queen, A-Ha and Tina Turner they look to create a fun, party atmosphere.

Flaxmill Voices – Immersive Sound and Light Evening by Andy McKeown

We will be open for drinks and cakes from 7pm to 9pm on Friday 27th September with live background music provided by Andy Lowe and Benedict Johnson

More about the event, from Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings:

“The team at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings have been working with light and sound artist Andy McKeown to record local people saying the names of some of the many Flaxmill workers and their families who were recorded on censuses in the 1800s.

On the weekend of Friday 27 to Sunday 29 September, Andy will return with an immersive light show in the Dyehouse over three days, accompanied by an immersive soundscape of the recorded names.

Twelve projectors will project a continuously changing live mix of Shadows and Texts, with visitors covered with moving words in an immersive experience. Outdoors the South Engine House will be covered by names flowing upwards.

Additional recording of names will take place in a sound booth during each afternoon (12 until 4pm) and those who have already recorded can return to ‘clock on’ on a board with the card they received. This board will then be preserved, becoming a work in its own right.

The sound installation will run in the Dye house each day from 12 until 4pm

The projections  and sound installations will be from 7pm to 10pm on Friday 27, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September 2024, with some projections also in the Dye House in the daytime, from 10am to 4pm.

All events are free. No need to book.”

Late Night Opening for ‘Flaxmill Voices’

Flaxmill Voices – an Evening of Illuminations and Recording with artist Andy McKeown

We’ll be open late on Friday the 9th of February providing light refreshments for anyone passing by and for those visiting Andy McKeown illuminations - it’s also the perfect opportunity to take part in Andy’s upcoming art piece 2000 voices.

Quoted from Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings:

See Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings in a different light as artist Andy McKeown hosts a free evening of illuminations and recording.

Andy will be providing an alternative view of the site as he projects his art against the sides of the buildings. You will also have the opportunity to take part in a piece of community art. Read aloud a name of one of the 800 people who used to work at the flaxmill. Recordings of the mill worker’s names will form part of Flaxmill Voices, a unique exhibition to be installed onsite later in the year.

  • 4pm to 7pm Recording of millworkers names.

  • From dusk around 5pm to 7pm – Projection of Andy McKeown’s ‘Minutiae’ art series onto the Flaxmill buildings

  • 4pm to 7pm – Turned Wood Café serving a light menu and drinks

  • 5pm to 7pm – Mill exhibition open free of charge.

  • Event Free, no need to book tickets

Andy’s projection will feature some of Andy’s work from his ‘Minutiae’ series over a decade ago, before the site was restored in a £28million project, which included £20.7million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The differences between the site then, in a state of abandonment and dilapidation, to now are pronounced.

Shrewsbury-based McKeown said:

“The opening of the Flax Mill in 1797 led to rapid growth of the surrounding area to keep up with the need for labour, creating communities that survive to this day. This is your chance to find your voice in understanding the contribution and toil of the great number of people, many of them children, in making linen thread at this architecturally important place for almost 90 years.”
